Biography

Ronja Vitt completed her B.Sc. in “Environmental Sciences” with the minor subject “Meteorology and Climatology” from 2009 to 2012 at the University of Freiburg. At the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Vitt graduated the Master of Sciences in the subject “Earth System Sciences” in 2015. Afterwards she returned to the University of Freiburg, Chair of Environmental Meteorology and started her doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Matzarakis. From 2016 until 2017 she worked as a research assistant at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna at the Institute of Physiology, Pathophysiology and Biophysics. Since then, she continued her doctoral research with the collaboration of the Chair of Environmental Meteorology, University of Freiburg and the Centre for Human Biometeorological Research Freiburg (ZMMF) of German Weather Service (DWD).

Research

As part of her doctoral research in the field of animal biometeorology, Vitt investigates influences and effects of the thermal environment on livestock. Therefore, an energy balance model will be developed, simulating the main energy flows between the animal’s body surface (e.g. convection, thermal irradiance, respiration, water vapour diffusion and perspiration vaporization) and its thermal environment (e.g. air temperature, air humidity and wind velocity) in order to analyse cold stress and especially heat stress of livestock.
